“The Beauty with Brain!” That’s how I will describe National Taiwan University in one sentence. My internship at Academia Sinica and the Department of Physics at National Taiwan University was honestly one of the most enjoyable and meaningful experiences of my academic life. It gave me the chance to see how research is done in an international high QS ranked academic setting and it helped me grow both technically and personally. As a research scholar with polymer science background, spending time at the Academia Sinica and NTU Physics Department was rewarding. Being around motivated research scholars, master students and faculties pushed me to think more deeply about physics and research. Discussions during group meetings and casual conversations in the lab helped me understand how theory of physics connects with experiments. And beyond academics, the NTU campus itself is beautiful. The wide green spaces, old trees, and calm atmosphere made it a really pleasant place to work. Walking through the campus every day was something I genuinely looked forward to. It was relaxing and inspiring at the same time.
Overall, this internship strengthened my interest in research and confirmed that I want to continue working in an academic or research-oriented environment. The combination of meaningful lab work, great mentorship, and the amazing NTU campus made this experience truly memorable for me. I would like to thank my host Dr. Ya-Ping Hsieh and Prof. Mario Hofmann for this opportunity and the guidance through out the internship period.

It was an honor for me to internship at the Photonic Nanomaterial and Biomedical Imaging Laboratory under supervision of Dr. Ching-Wei Lin. During my internship, I gained extensive experience working with single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). I learned how to separate SWCNTs with different chiralities to obtain (6,5) SWCNTs, as well as how to use variance spectroscopy to observe aggregation in nanotube dispersions.
One of the challenging yet rewarding experiences for me was learning Python for variance spectroscopy data analysis. I had previously struggled with coding during my computational chemistry courses at my university. However, this internship encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and start learning Python seriously. Although I am still a beginner, I have become familiar with using Python for data analysis. None of this work would have been possible without the support of my lab mates, who were very welcoming and always willing to help my problem.
Beyond the laboratory, I also had the opportunity to explore Taiwan by visiting places such as Tamsui, Taipei 101, and Xiangshan Mountain. I even discovered a new favorite food, that is teppanyaki near the NTU campus, which recommended by my lab mates. The calm and peaceful atmosphere of Taiwan left a deep impression on me, and it is one of the reasons I hope to continue my studies here in the future.

During this six-month internship, I gained valuable hands-on experience with HPLC and MS, which helped me understand how these techniques are applied in real research settings. I learned to extract sugar molecules from human saliva, and further analyze the data to determine their structures. For this, we used the novel LODES method, which involves CID (Collision-Induced Dissociation) to fragment the molecules. This method was not only convenient but also highly sensitive.
This internship has enhanced my practical laboratory skills, deepened my understanding of analytical techniques, and given me confidence in conducting independent research. I feel very grateful for the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in a real-world lab environment.
I would like to sincerely thank Prof. Ni Chi Kung for giving me the opportunity to participate in the internship program and attend the conference. Through this experience, I not only learned more about chemistry but also gained insight into how mass spectrometry can be applied in different fields of science, broadening my perspective as a researcher.
I also want to express my gratitude to my mentors, Yen-Ting Lin and Dr. Hock Seng. Without their guidance throughout this journey, I would not have learned how to use the LODES method to determine complex sugar structures, nor would I have gained an understanding of how computational chemistry theories are applied in this project. Their mentorship was invaluable to my growth as a young researcher.

The first step to academia
This is my first time having an extended stay overseas. My internship is part of the Taiwan International Internship Program (TIIP), hosted by Academia Sinica. Personally, I’m impressed by the culture and ethics of the Taiwanese people. Although I’m also Chinese, I find them exceptionally polite and respectful! :D I’m happy to be part of Dr. Jen’s group for these two months, contributing to research related to Bose–Einstein condensates (BECs). I’m very grateful that my PI and the group members — especially Dr. Hasan, the postdoc who taught me some simulation techniques — were willing to teach and guide me, even though my stay is relatively short. Over these two months, I’ve gained theoretical knowledge on BECs, quantum optics, turbulence, Python simulations, and more — through self-study, discussions with my PI and group members, seminars, and talks. They offered me many opportunities to learn, and I really enjoy the environment here. Most importantly, this experience has helped me reflect on whether I should pursue a career in academia in the future! This internship marks for beginning, now I feel more motivated to continue learning and to contribute to research in quantum physics.

I have a lot of reasons why I applied for this internship: to experience living by myself, to sightsee Taiwan, and to enjoy Taiwan’s food and milk tea! But the main reason for applying is because I wanted to see if being a scientist is the right career for me. I’m still not 100% sure if I want to pursue a PhD yet, and this internship was the perfect opportunity for me to see if I will like it.
Because of this internship, I was able to experience first-hand what it’s like to work at a science laboratory. I experienced having weekly meetings, writing up lab reports, working with instruments, being frustrated at my code for not working, and being happy after finding the bug in my code! Work can definitely be stressful, so I always make sure to balance work with life by hanging out with friends and exploring Taiwan.
I am so grateful for the friends that I have met here. Even though the TIGP Dorm is a bit far from NTU, the 30-minute commute going to and back is worth it, because I got to hang out with the other interns and visit other places with them. I am also very grateful for my friendly labmates. They gave me insights into my project and showed me good food and milk tea places around the NTU campus!
I am grateful to have been accepted into this internship. Two months is very fast, but it’s enough time for me to get a taste of what it’s like to be a scientist. To be honest, I’m still not sure if being a scientist is the right career for me. Still, I’m sure that whatever career I choose, all the hard and soft skills I’ve learned and all the good connections I’ve made will help me succeed. Thank you, Taiwan!

Still, I’m sure that whatever career I choose, all the hard and soft skills I’ve learned and all the good connections I’ve made will help me succeed. Thank you, Taiwan!
